A character string checking device comprises a state transition table creating section for creating a state transition table under a check condition described in a regular expression and an automaton making a transition in accordance with the created state transition table. The automaton makes a transition to the initial state not reading the inputted characters if there are no next transition state corresponding to the set of the current state and the inputted characters in the state transition table. Alternatively, a character string checking device comprises a state transition table creating section for creating a state transition table under a check condition described in a regular expression and an automaton making a transition in accordance with the created state transition table. The state transition table creating section creates a state transition table while setting an excluded character making a transition to a predetermined state not reading the inputted characters if there is no next transition state corresponding the set of the current state and the inputted characters in the state transition table created under the check condition.
