COMPOSITE ARTIFICIAL TURF STRUCTURE WITH SHOCK ABSORPTION AND DRAINAGE

An artificial turf (A) is disclosed that comprises an outer artificial grass layer (B) with a generally uniform exterior playing surface. A deflection layer (C) is disposed below the artificial grass layer (B). The deflection layer (C) has a plurality of interstices providing open passages for water drainage; and loose particles (S) are dispersed into the interstices up to a prescribed level to provide stability and enhance shock absorption so that the deflection layer (C) deflects when the artificial grass (B) is impacted to help absorb the impact and maintain normal playing action. A base surface is disposed below the deflection layer (C) which includes a flexible grid system (D) having a plurality of individual cells (16) interconnected together to provide flexibility and conform to the contour of a compacted subbase surface (14).
