PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an exhaust emission control characteristic when starting an engine, in an exhaust emission control system of a multicylinder internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinder groups. SOLUTION: In this multicylinder internal combustion engine 1, a front stage catalyst 11 is arranged in a partial exhaust passage 8a among exhaust passages 8a and 8b arranged with respective cylinder groups 1a and 1b, and a downstream side catalyst 12 is arranged in a collecting exhaust passage 10 formed by collecting the exhaust passages 8a and 8b. When starting the engine, in a cylinder 2 belonging to the cylinder group 1b connected with the exhaust passage 8b of not arranging the front stage catalyst 11, ignition to fuel is halted although the fuel is injected and intake air is flown in.
