Disclosed is a piston engine (10) comprising a cylinder (11) with a piston chamber (11a) into and out of which a piston (12) that is guided on a connecting rod (12a) can be inserted and retracted. The cylinder (11) has a valve port (15) encompassing a valve (17) for introducing and discharging a working medium (22). The valve (17) can be alternately brought into a closed and an open position by means of a hydraulic control system (23). The valve (17) is arranged in a valve seat (18) facing the piston (11) and can be opened in a direction facing away from the piston chamber (11a). The valve (17) has a closing surface (17a) that is flush with the internal surface (14) of the bottom (13) of the cylinder in the closed position.
