PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a backing member for friction stir welding, which is capable of sufficiently ensuring the welding strength of a metallic material and having high durability; and a method for friction stir welding using the same. SOLUTION: In the backing member 1, a heat storage material 7 is filled in an internal space S surrounded by a loading part 3 and side parts 4, 4. Sufficient heat input is performed to a backside of a butted part P by the heat storage material 7. The plastic flow of metallic materials 12, 12 at the butted part P is sufficiently promoted to ensure the welding strength. In the backing member 1, the bending strength to the temperature when the friction heat is input is ensured by a metallic contour member 2.
