PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based ink composition for a ballpoint pen which can form a continuous handwriting also when writing in the status the nib is turned upward. SOLUTION: The ink composition for a ball-point pen is characterized in that the viscosity is in the range of 8,000 mPa s or more and 40,000 mPa s or less at 25°C in the range of the shear rate of 0.003 s<SP>-1</SP>or more and 0.1 s<SP>-1</SP>or less, and the viscosity is 40 mPa s or less at 25°C in the range of the shear rate of 300 s<SP>-1</SP>or more and 1,000 s<SP>-1</SP>or less.
