A liquid crystal display according to the present invention comprises a liquid crystal display panel, a backlight unit which includes light sources of supplying light to at least one side of a light guide plate part and divides a surface light source emitted to the liquid crystal display panel into blocks, a dimming value determining part which analyzes an input image by the sizes of the blocks and determines a dimming value for each block for individually controlling the luminance of the light sources in a first dimming range, and a dimming value controlling part which controls the dimming value of the first blocks corresponding to a black region with a minimum value out of the first dimming range when the input image is identical to a specific image including the block region of a preset size or more. So, contrast range in the black region can be improved. |
