PURPOSE: A vibration amount detecting device for a recording medium and a method thereof are provided to precisely calculate the vibration amount of a recording medium at an initial driving without using any additional sensor, thereby upwardly controlling an rpm of the recording medium within an allowable vibration amount range and reducing the time required for reading record signals. CONSTITUTION: A vibration amount detecting method for a recording medium includes the steps of detecting a time length taken for detecting a predetermined signal from an initialed loaded recording medium(S11-S20), and calculating a vibration amount of the recording medium according to the measured time length(S23), wherein the predetermined signal is generated according to whether a synchronization signal of minimum unit recorded on the recording medium is normally detected or not.
