In a method of sweetening a sour hydrocarbon liquid containing mercaptans using a finely divided particulate sweetening catalyst comprising an element of Group IB, IIB, V, VI or VIII of the Periodic Table in elemental form or in association with an element which in its normal state is diatomic, or associated with a substantially water- and oil-insoluble base exchange material which has an exchange capacity of at least 100 grains per cubic foot, the catalyst is regenerated by contacting it with ammonia or an amine. The catalyst may contain copper, silver, gold, platinum or palladium. Many specific aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic amines are listed. The amine or ammonia may be dissolved in an organic solvent. |
