Coatings by deposition of a latex consisting of a terpolymer of (1) 50-95% of hydrophobic ethylenically unsatd. monomer, (2) 2-30% of a more hydrophilic ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and (3) 0.5 to 5% of a water-soluble ionic product copolymerisable with (2). The terpolymer is used for coating substrates with clear continuous films which adhere uniformly and are non-blocking. The monomer (1) is preferably vinylidene chloride. The monomer (2) is preferably acrylonitrile. The ionic monomers (3) are products which contain a double bond and an ionisable group and are soluble in water, and which have the general formula: R-Z-Q-O+N A- (in which R is a vinyl or alpha-substituted vinyl radical; Z is a difunctional group which activates the double bond of the vinyl group; for example, -CO-, -CO-O-, -CO-NR-; Q is a bivalent hydrocarbon radical with the valency bonds on different carbon atoms, preferably, alkylated amino alkyl methacrylates; -O+N is an onium ion; A- is an anion). An example of a suitable onium ion is.
|
