[Also in Division C3] A bituminous sheet e.g. a road surface reinforced with threads of synthetic polycondensation products wherein the adhesion between the threads and the bituminous material is promoted by the use of a synthetic polymer having a softening point of above 50‹C which, when softened, wets the threads and is miscible with the bitumen, is made by coating the threads with the polymer before application of molten bitumen or by mixing the polymer with the bitumen and then coating the threads. The threads may be twisted or untwisted continuous multifilament yarns, monofilaments, spun yarns and fibres and these may be knitted or woven polyesters and polyamides homopolymers and copolymers are preferred e.g. polycaprolactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide polyethylene terephthalate. Suitable synthetic polymers include coumarone, indene, maleic phenolic and polyterpene resins, the esters of rosin, petroleum resins of alicyclic structure or of aromatic type, alkyl substituted aromatic compounds, low M.W. multinucleus aromatic compounds, copolymers of vinyltoluene andα-methyl styrene or of cyclopentadiene and styrene. The term bituminous material includes asphaltic bitumen, asphalt and ozokerite.</p> |
