The auxiliary-signal recording system, for magnetic tape recorders, records auxiliary signals longitudinally over the same surface area as the transversely recorded video signals. The auxiliary signals are recorded and replayed by a fixed magnetic head system on the rear side of the tape. The auxiliary signals are recorded only opposite the transverse tracks containing the vertical sync signal. The auxiliary signals contain binary coded time information e.g. in time units of one second. The rear heads make use of the depth of the magnetic oxide coating on the tape, whereas the normal front heads use only the skin of the tape in order to achieve separation of signals.
