The curling iron has a tubular barrel (10) in which a heater is axially slidable between advanced and retracted positions. A handle (11) is located at one end of the barrel and a liquid-contg. reservoir (12) is located at the other end. A wick extends from the reservoir (12) and is contacted by the heater when in its advanced position to generate steam. A seal is located between the heater and barreel to define with the wick a steam chamber. The handle (11) carries a finger-operable actuator linked to the heater. When hair is wrapped around the barrel (10) and the actuator is manipulated to slide the heater to its advanced position, steam is produced and flows out through holes (67) onto the hair.
