The drawer-opening and closing mechanism consists of a lower shell fixed to the drawer and forming an assembly housing (12). The lower shell contains a movably positioned spring-loaded slide piece (18). Opposite the slide-piece is a spring-loaded bolt (30) and a profiled bar (16) on the side of the furniture body. A spring-loaded ratchet (28) releases or secures the slide piece in relation to the lower shell. At least one damping element in the form of a pneumatic piston-cylinder unit (46,50) temporarily delays the opening and closing process.
