<p>PURPOSE:To ensure a highly efficient sorting, by observing a character from the coordinate axis in the plural directions and counting the number of character lines that cross the character cutting line orthogonal to the coordinate axis at each position on the axis. CONSTITUTION:A binary coded character pattern is stored in a storage circuit 1 and supplied to a feature extracting device 5 after a normalizing process 2, a framing process 3 and a smoothing process 4, respectively. The device 5 divides equally the inside of a region of WXW meshes framed by a smoothing processor 4 into m pieces of coarse square mesh regions. Then a character is observed from the two coordinate axes X and Y for the character part existing within each coarse mesh region, and the character is scanned in the direction orthogonal to the axis Y from each positin Xj on the axis X (or Y). Thus the number of crossing character lines is counted to obtain a function G(Xj). In such way, the functions Gi(X) and Gi(Y) are extracted in the i-th mesh region. Thus the function Gi(X) and Gi(Y) extracted at m pieces of coarse mesh regions are used as the features to sort the character patterns.</p> |
