PURPOSE: A control device and method of an idle rpm of vehicle are provided for preventing a drop or stall of an engine caused by gear selection. CONSTITUTION: A vehicle sensing portion(10) comprises an ignition sensor(11) sensing whether an engine is running, a gear sensor(12) sensing gear range selection signal of a shift lever, an engine rpm sensor(13) sensing the engine rpm, and a water temperature sensor(14). A controller(20) controls general operation to maintain safe engine rpm by analysing each sensed data. A reduction compensation of the engine rpm after initial ignition is proceeded. In the case that gear part of a shift lever is selected from "N" range to "D" range before a certain time after the ignition, a real time learned value in the reduction compensation is initialized. And the compensation of an air quantity is carried out by the controller(20).
