The ratchet mechanism is for a screwdriver, socket spanner etc, having a selector mechanism preventing the ratchet wheel turning in one or both directions and contained in the grip housing. A driving member coupled to the wheel has resilient clamping members securing the tool to be actuated. The ratchet wheel (10) forms a coating block (3), onto which the socket portion (30) of the driving member fits. The block can have a central opening (51) for the insertion of an adapter bar (8) or other flexible coupling member forming part of the driving member. ADVANTAGE - Transmits high torque while allowing easy changeover of driving members.
