Two crepe paper strips (20, 21) are supplied to an opened mouth (34) of a device so that a glass tube (2) can be pushed between them and through the packing mouth across the longitudinal direction. The strips are then secured by a seam against each other immediately adjoining the outer circumference of the tube (2) so that the tube is gripped as in a two-part clip. The tubes can be wrapped individually or grouped in bands depending on whether the packs are separated individually or not. The wrapping material can be formed like a stocking matching the cross-section of the glass tube or object being wrapped. In the packing position the wrapping can form a twin-shelled sliding sleeve and/or be secured by an adhesive seam. At least part of the wrapping material has padding. USE/ADVANTAGE - Simplified mechanised packing process providing good protection for glass tubes.
