Novel compounds useful as herbicides which are effective in controlling a wide variety of lowland weeds including difficultly controllable ones and safe for mammals; process for the preparation of them; herbicides containing them as the active ingredient; and novel compounds to be used in the process as the raw material. The above novel compounds useful as herbicides are di- or tri-fluoromethanesulfonyl anilide derivatives represented by general formula (I) or salts thereof wherein R<1> is hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxyalkyl; and R<2> is hydrogen when R<1> is hydrogen or alkyl, while R<2> is hydrogen or fluoro when R<1> is alkoxyalkyl.
