PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for ammoxidation reaction, which is composed of a Sb-Re complex oxide and catalizes the ammoxidation reaction to an unsaturated nitrile such as methacrylonitrile in the presence of a molecular oxygen containing gas and ammonia and a method for producing an unsaturated nitrile such as methacrylonitrile from an aliphatic hydrocarbon such as isobutylene or isobutane using the catalyst. SOLUTION: An unsaturated nitrile such as methacrylonitrile is produced by subjecting an aliphatic hydrocarbon such as isobutylene or isobutane to vapor phase catalytic ammoxidation using a molecular oxygen containing gas and ammonia in the presence of a catalyst for the ammoxidation reaction, which is composed of a Sb-Re complex oxide such as SbRe2O6.
