<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cathode active material; and a lithium battery using it. <P>SOLUTION: This cathode active material includes a lithium metal oxide having a layered-spinel composite structure of formula 1: xLi<SB>2</SB>MO<SB>3</SB>-yLiMeO<SB>2</SB>-zLi<SB>1+d</SB>M'<SB>2-d</SB>O<SB>4</SB>, wherein x+y+z=1, 0<x<1, 0<y<1, 0<z<1 and 0≤d≤0.33. In the formula, M is one or more metals selected from a group comprising Mn, Ti and Zn; Me is one or more selected from a group comprising Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Al, Mg, Zr and B; and M' is one or more selected from a group comprising Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Al, Mg, Zr, B. Thereby, the cathode active material has the layered-spinel composite structure capable of storing and releasing lithium, whereby initial coulombic efficiency and capacity retention ratio of this lithium battery using the cathode active material can be improved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
