PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization converting element which is adaptable to almost the entire visible light wavelength region and can be manufactured while preventing such a failure that the yield thereof is lowered or the manufacturing and material costs thereof are increased and to provide a liquid crystal projector using the polarization converting element. SOLUTION: The polarization converting element 1 is provided with: a polarization separating element 2 for separating the incident light into two kinds of polarized light; and a retardation plate 3 which is arranged selectively on the light emission surface of the polarization separating element 2 and has many retardation parts 3b. The polarization separating element 2 comprises columnar glass materials 2a stuck successively to a plurality of interfaces each having 45°angle with both of the light entrance surface and light emission surface of the polarization separating element and polarization separating films 2b and light reflecting films 2c arranged alternately on the plurality of interfaces. The retardation plate 3 comprises a single plate quartz crystal having an optical axis in one plane, 25-31μm thickness and a 1/2λretardation function. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
