PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-error high-precision optical absolute value encoder in which a wide interval is kept between a scale substrate and a detecting section even if the optical absolute value encoder is made to have high-resolution. SOLUTION: The optical absolute value encoder comprises an absolute data generating means for generating one absolute data, and a plurality of incremental data generating means for generating incremental data of different cycles. Among the incremental data generating means, at least two of the incremental data generating means having shortest and second shortest data cycles include, respectively, index scales 7, 8, incremental scales 3, 4, and light receiving element arrays 11, 12.
