PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the deterioration of accuracy in detection of image density by reflecting characteristic change caused by an external factor therein, and to enhance accuracy in variable control of an image forming condition using a result of the detection. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes: an image forming means 10 for forming an image on an image holding body 15; a storage means 33 for storing amount of load generated by image formation by the image forming means 10 and information on circumstances where the load is generated; a detection means 20 for detecting the density of the patch image on the image holding body 15; a control means 32 for varying the image forming condition in the image forming means 10 based on a result of detection by the detection means 20; and a correction means 34 for correcting the result of detection by the density detection means 20 or a target value of the image forming condition varied by the control means 32 by using information on the amount of the load and time elapsed after the load is generated, both being stored in the storage means 33, when varying the image forming condition by the control means 32.
