An improvement in a process for isolating prostanoic acid derivatives, including PGA2 acetate methyl ester and its 15 beta -epimer from marine invertebrates, in which colonies or colony pieces of Plexaura homomalla (Esper), 1792, forma S or R, are frozen prior to extraction. The products are useful for pharmacological purposes and as intermediates for the preparation of other prostanoic acid derivatives with pharmacological uses.
