The present invention relates to a line powered COder/DECoder (codec) th at is capable of retaining an off-hook condition during a call bridge. The line powered codec is comprised of a high current portion powered by a telephone line coupled to the line powered codec. The codec also includes a low current portion powere d by a voltage source other than the telephone line. The low current portion includ es a register that stores an on-hook/off-hook status of the line powered codec.
