Air conditioning apparatus has a heat pump for the heating and cooling of enclosed rooms, the apparatus communicating both with the air in the room and with external air. The heat pump comprising a free-piston Stirling unit driven with an oscillating movement by a driving machine. The air conditioning apparatus having separate channels for stale air and fresh air and being equipped with means for altering the air supply or the direction of flow in order to enable the method of operation (cooling/heating) to be selected.
