Printer adjustable for different paper thicknesses

The printer has a print head carriage (7) provided with a setting device. The device adjusts the distance of the print head from a counter-bearing in dependence on the paper thickness. The paper transport rollers (2,4) are arranged in pairs. One roller of each pair is mounted on an axis (3) which is displaced against a spring bias in dependence on the paper thickness. A measuring sensor (6) cooperates with a receiver (18) mounted on the print head carriage. The difference between measuring signals provided before and after insertion of the paper is used to control a setting drive (17) for the print head.
