The safety pedal has a pedal resting surface (15) for the cleat which includes a cam to lift the side of the cleat, which is moved away from the center of the pedal when backlash rotation is applied to the cleat. The cam is on the side of the pedal facing outward so that it only acts when the rear end of the cleat is moved out sideways.
