The automobile has a deformation element (15) extending along the gap defined between a front hood (7) and an adjacent body component (8), which is deformed upon impact for protection of a pedestrian, with a blocking device (21) bridging the deformation element, for supporting the front hood and/or the body component in its normal position (NP), released via a crash sensor (25) and an associated control (24). An independent claim for an operating method for an automobile pedestrian protection device is also included.
