PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent liquid crystal medium. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal medium is characterized by comprising one or more compounds represented by formula I (wherein, at least one of ring A and ring B represents an oxygen-containing heterocycle; Y<SP>1</SP>and Y<SP>2</SP>represent each H or F; R<SP>0</SP>represents an alkyl group, an alkoxy group or the like; and X<SP>0</SP>represents a halogen, a halogen-substituted alkyl group or the like). The use of the liquid crystal medium for electro-optical applications is provided and the display has the medium.
