PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device preventing the occurrence of flickers and showing high display quality and to provide a method for driving a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal display panel DP having a display section comprising a plurality of display pixels PX arranged in a matrix; a surface light source device BKL illuminating the liquid crystal display panel DP; and a control means CNT controlling the liquid crystal display panel DP and the surface light source device BKL. The control means CNT includes: a means 5 periodically alternately switching and applying a signal in positive polarity and a signal in negative polarity with respect to a reference voltage to the display pixels PX; a source driver SD; a gate driver GD; and a surface light source device control means 6 that compares an optical response waveform when a signal in positive polarity is applied on the display pixels PX with an optical response waveform when a signal in negative polarity is applied, and controls the brightness of the surface light source device BKL to eliminate the brightness difference between a display by the signal in positive polarity and a display by the signal in negative polarity.
