The invention relates to a quick, sensitive, specific, reproducible and low-cost method for identifying, and determining the purity of the bacteria Piscirickettsia salmonis. This method is a method based on PCR-RFLP (to be completed) for identifying Piscirickettsia salmonis and also for establishing if a sample of Piscirickettsia salmonis (for example, a bacterial culture) is pure or contaminated with other bacteria that can cohabit with Piscirickettsia salmonis. This method could be employed in laboratories around the world as the standard technology for monitoring bacterial cultures and for technologies used for the epidemiological surveillance of Piscirickettsia salmonis. The invention also relates to a kit for identifying, and determining the purity of Piscirickettsia salmonis.
