If the output pulses of a frequency-sensitive, edge-triggered phase detector (5) operating with flip flops (1, 2, 3, 4) are applied to a further flip flop (13) without interposing a low-pass filter, this flip flop (13) being set or not set in dependence on the polarity of the output pulses of the phase detector (5), a very accurate frequency and/or phase monitoring of an alternating or pulse voltage without hysteresis and time delay becomes possible. This is frequently of decisive significance mainly in very fast and/or digital closed-loop or open-loop control circuits. <IMAGE>
