PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound having high purity by a simple method using 2,5-xylenol or 2,3,5-trimethylphenol as a raw material. SOLUTION: The objective compound of the formula (R is H or methyl) is produced either by reacting 1mol of 2,5-xylenol with 0.9-1.8mol of formaldehyde in the presence of 0.8-1.2mol of a basic catalyst and 9-20 pts.wt. (based on 1 pt.wt. of the catalyst) of water at 5-15 deg.C or by reacting 1mol of 2,3,5- trimethylphenol with 1-8mol of formaldehyde in the presence of 1-2mol of a basic catalyst and 9-20 pts.wt. (based on 1 pt.wt. of the catalyst) of water at 0-5 deg.C. |
