PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a β-alumina sintered compact, having a high strength and reliability and useful as a solid electrolytic pipe used in an Na-S battery, etc., by specifying the maximum diameter of pores present within a specific range from the surface in the β-alumina sintered compact. SOLUTION: This β-alumina sintered compact consists essentially of β-alumina represented by the formula, Na2 O.xAl2 O3 [(x) is 5-11]. In the sintered compact, the maximum diameter of pores present within the range to 500μm in the wall thickness direction from the surface is <=80μm. The maximum diameter of the pores described herein is the major axis of the pores present in various shapes such as a spherical or a cylindrical form. When the several pores communicate, the whole containing all the communication pores is considered as one pores and the major axis in the maximum extension direction is regarded as the maximum diameter. As a result, the sintered compact is used as a solid electrolytic pipe for an Na-S battery and excellent in heat cycle resistance. |
