<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the response characteristics and voltage holding charactristics by incorporating a photopolymerizable resin and a photoinitiator having polymerizable groups in the molecule in a polymer wall. SOLUTION: This device consists of a pair of glass substrates 1, 2 and a liquid crystal layer held between the substrates. The liquid crystal layer has plural number of liquid crystal regions 8 each surrounded by a polymer wall 7. The polymer wall 7 consists of a photopolymerizable resin. The liquid crystal region 8 is substantially surrounded by the polymer wall 7 and both substrates 1, 2. A desired pattern of transparent electrode is formed on each surface of the substrate 1, 2 facing the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal molecules 9 in the liquid crystal region 8 have axial symmetry and twisted orientation. In this method, in order to decrease the residual amt. of the photopolymn. initiator in the liquid crystal, it is effective to use a photopolymn. initiator having polymerizable functional groups in the molecule. As a result, the possibility of the presence of residual photopolymn. initiator as a low mol.wt. compd. in the liquid crystal region or in the polymer region can be decreased.</p> |
