PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture an MR read converter in a simple process by using a ferromagnetic material separated by a thin film layer of a nonmagnetic metal material. SOLUTION: An MR element is insulated from a substrate 1 by a dielectric layer 2, and then the MR element is electrically and magnetically separated by an insulating gap 2A. Suitable orientation is given to a layer 5 consisting of a hard PM(permanent magnet) material of high magnetic permeability by a foundation layer 4. An MR layer 6 is electrically pinned by the PM layer 5, and is fixed in one magnetic position, and a thin layer 7 functions as an enhancing layer. A vertical bias is impressed upon a free MR layer 10, and a bias magnetic field is orthogonal to a magnetic field of the pinned MR layer 5. A hard PM layer 12 is fitted to exhibit the same function as the PM layer 5. The MR layer 6 is magnetically coupled with the PM layer 5, while the MR layer 10 is magnetostatically coupled with the PM layer 12, so that interaction is performed to give a horizontal bias. A current path of the MR element is obtained by an electroconductive lead layer 13. |
