PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device capable of picking up even an object with a high luminance without deteriorating the S/N of the luminance levels within a storage permissible charge amount range of a solid-state image pickup element even with respect to a subject including a high luminance part in the case of picking up the subject. SOLUTION: In the case that a discrimination means 6 discriminates it that a video signal obtained by picking up an image of a subject with a low speed electronic shutter pulse in a frame storage system solid-state image pickup element 2 reaches partially a saturation level, the solid-state image pickup element 2 picks up an image of the subject with a low speed electronic shutter pulse for one field and the solid-state image pickup element 2 picks up in image of the subject with a high speed electronic shutter pulse for the other field and both the field video images are stored an image storage means 14, 15 and an image compositing means 16 is used to composite the video signal of one field and the video signal of the other field so as to replace the waveform of the saturated part and its vicinity of both sides of the video signal of one field with the corresponding waveform of the video signal of the other field.
