The invention relates to a smart card with a card body (2) and, housed inside the card body (2), a semiconductor chip (3) on which are integrated a control circuit (7) and a semiconductor memory device coupled electrically to the control circuit (7). The control circuit (7) is supplied with a voltage generated by a voltage supply circuit (12) and with a timing signal provided by a timing device (13) mounted separately from the control circuit (6). The control circuit (7) of the semiconductor chip (3) housed inside the card body (2) has an associated sensor circuit (14) which detects any deviation from the allowed operating state of the control circuit (7) and, in the event of a non-allowed operating state, generates a triggering signal which is directed to a triggering circuit (18) located downstream of the sensor circuit (14) and associated with the semiconductor memory device. The triggering circuit (18) reacts to the triggering signal by controlling an at least partial erasure of the data contents of memory cells in the semiconductor memory device.
