Releasable coupling element for optical fibre cables

The coupling element provides a releasable optical and mechanical coupling between two optical fibre cables (1), using cooperating connector parts (3,4) fitted to the optical fibre cable ends (2), held together by a clamp (5). One connector part has guide elements (6) for accurate positioning of the other connector part (4), the clamp being U-shaped with a slit in each arm (7) for reception of a respective optical fibre cable. The spacing of the flexible clamp arms is selected to provide a spring force holding the connector parts together.
