PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly execute the attachment and detachment between a process cartridge and an image forming apparatus by energizing a contactor toward the contact member of a process unit to guide a retainer and to regulate the position of the retainer. SOLUTION: The corner parts 23 of the process cartridge B and the guides 105c of the retainer 105 guide each other and the process cartridge B is smoothly inserted into the apparatus body. Simultaneously the retainer 105 is pressed to the process cartridge B and a springs 103 are compressed, by which the retainer 105 is moved to the position where the retainer is pushed on from the position of a projecting state. Projections 108 on the retainer 105 abut against the longitudinal end of the process cartridge B up to the position where the recesses 107 of the process cartridge B and the projections 108 on the retainer 105 are positioned flush with each other in the process that the process cartridge B is successively pushed, by which the distance is maintained and, therefore, the contact of the contact plate 104 of the process cartridge B and contactor 102 is averted.
