PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium detection device for integrating tip and jam detection mechanisms for a recording medium such as a paper sheet, to realize the commonness of an optical sensor. SOLUTION: A driven roller 20, equipped with plural optical slits 24 in a peripheral direction on a side surface, is provided so as to contact a fed paper sheet 1 to be displaced and also rotated by given quantity. A reflection type optical sensor 30 is provided so as to position a light axis 33 outside a region positioned by the slit 24 before the displacement of the roller 20, and within the region positioned by the slit 24 after the displacement of the toller 20, thereby detecting the tip and jam of the recording medium by the sensor 30.
