PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent light-emitting device by obtaining a higher order smectic phase in a stabilized state, and forming a carrier transport layer having excellent carrier transport properties. SOLUTION: A monoaxially oriented film is formed on a substrate and a polymerizable rod liquid crystal which exhibits a higher order smectic phase is coated thereon to form a thin film, and the thin film is oriented and then polymerized at a temperature which shows its liquid crystal phase having a hexagonal crystal system.
