PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for splicing an optical fiber by which a connection loss at the fusion splicing point between a first optical fiber and a second optical fiber having mutually different mode field diameters is reduced. SOLUTION: In a preheating process, the mode field diameter in the end surface is enlarged by heating the area including the end surface of the first optical fiber 1 having a large mode field diameter by diffusing an additive. In a splicing process after the preheating process, the first optical fiber 1 is fusion spliced with the second optical fiber 2. In an after heating process after the splicing process, the additive is diffused by heating the area including the fusion splicing point 3 between the first optical fiber 1 and the second optical fiber 2.
