PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing bisphenol by condensing a phenol with a carbonyl compound in higher conversion rate and selectivity than those in conventional methods. SOLUTION: In producing a bisphenol by reacting a phenol with a carbonyl compound in the presence of an acid catalyst, an alkyldimercaptane expressed by general formula I: HS-A-SH (wherein A is >=4C straight chain or branched alkylene group) is used as a cocatalyst.
