PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new liquid crystal compound which makes it possible to produce a high-quality liquid crystalline thin film by means of a solution process such as a spin coat or the like at a room temperature and which makes it possible to give a thin film transistor showing the high degree of the carrier moving and the high on/off ratio as well as having the high ionizing potential, the little oxidizability and the excellent durability, and to provide a thin film transistor using this. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal compound is a smectic liquid crystal compound expressed by general formula (1) (wherein, R<SB>1</SB>is a 1-12C straight-chain alkyl group; R<SB>2</SB>is a 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy group; and n is an integer of 1-3). The thin film transistor is obtained by spin coating the above liquid crystal compound. The transistor is obtained by mounting the above thin film transistor on a substrate, heat annealing, thereafter vacuum-depositing a source electrode and a drain electrode.
