PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gene transfer agent having high gene transfer activity and easily dischargeable from a cell. SOLUTION: This gene transfer agent comprises a polymer material having branched chain, wherein the branched chain has a cationic polymer block and an anionic polymer block, the polymerization degree of the cationic polymer block is larger than the polymerization degree of the anionic polymer block and a plurality of branched chains are crosslinked through polyvalent cations. The polymer material is obtained by using a compound preferably having three or more N,N-dialkyl-dithiocarbamylmethyl molecular groups in the same molecule as an iniferter, carrying out light-induced living polymerization of a vinyl monomer to the iniferter to obtain a homopolymer composed of a branched polymer, carrying out block polymerization of an anionic monomer having an acidic functional group such as 4-vinylbenzoic acid to the homopolymer and crosslinking the product with calcium ion or magnesium ion.
