PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission which achieves forward 7 gear shifts by using three sets of simple planetary gears and five friction elements, wherein members passing through an outer diameter side of a planetary gear are minimized in number. SOLUTION: In an automatic transmission, a first ring gear is normally locked. An input shaft is normally connected to a second carrier. An output shaft is normally connected to a rotary member made up of a second ring gear and a third carrier. Five friction elements are composed of a first friction element selectively connecting a first carrier and a third ring gear, a second friction element selectively connecting a first sun gear and the second carrier, a third friction element selectively connecting the first sun gear and a second sun gear, a fourth friction element selectively connecting the first carrier and second carrier and a fifth friction element selectively connecting the first carrier and second sun gear. At least forward 7 gear shifts and reverse 1 gear shift are achieved through combinations of simultaneously fastened two of the five friction elements. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
