PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating device for use in a door with an electric lock, an automatic door, etc., which can automatically close at least an automatically or manually opened protective cover by a simple structure. SOLUTION: When a human-body detecting sensor 27 detects the presence of a person within a predetermined range with respect to an operation panel 2, a control unit 28 rotates and drives a motor 26 in a prescribe direction, and moves a protective cover 3 vertically upward via a pinion gear 25 and a rack rail 34 so as to open the detective cover 3. At the completion of the detection of the presence of the person by the human-body detecting sensor 27, after the lapse of a predetermined period of time from the opening of the protective cover, or after the lapse of a predetermined period of time from the start of an operation of an operation switch 4, the control unit rotates and drives the motor 26 in a reverse direction so as to close the protective cover 3.
